Golf Value

There are many value definitions.  One definition I like is from Warren Buffet – “Price is what you pay.  Value is what you get”.  Other value definitions I like are:  “we never know the worth of water until the well is dry” (supposedly an old English proverb) and “One should not think about the result; one does not travel to reach a destination, but to travel” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe).

As far as I’m concerned those definitions reflect many aspects of what golf value means to me – what I get out of playing a round of golf, the fact I like to play and miss getting out at least once a week, and the journey around the course. Of course I can’t forget the money aspect which brings me from wanting to play and the journey around the course to the price as per Mr. Buffet’s value definition.  I also can’t ignore some other factors as well – how well I played, the friends I play with, the golf challenge, being outdoors on a nice day, and the scenery.  These all affect how I perceive and measure the value I receive from playing a round of golf.

We all want to play a good course at a reasonable price.  Us lifepast50 types define value differently depending upon where we live and our finances.  I’m lucky to live in Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) where there are numerous reasonably priced courses that have served to establish my price and value baseline.

Call me a Value Golfer – frugal and thrifty but not a complete miser.  What represents value for me at home might be a huge bargain in larger metropolitan areas or possibly poor value for retirees that play 3 or 4 times a week. There are lots of outstanding places to play and I’ve had the good fortune of playing in some of those places – check out my golf course reviews to see some of the great places I’ve played and how I rated them on my golf value scale.

I plan on playing in other places and will add course reviews over time. My course reviews are based upon a set of evaluation criteria that I defined – I wanted to put some meat around what golf value is.  I want to get bang for my golfing dollar and I want to deal with this from my perspective as an average recreational golfer……I play for recreation and I’m enthusiastic about the game. I believe there are lots of golfers like me.  We aren’t pros, nor are we hackers (at least not on most days) so for the sake of quick categorization, I’m calling the place between pro and hacker as “average”.

I believe the average golfer is interested in different aspects and qualities than is currently presented in most golf magazines and golf related TV programming where the focus is often on posh locations with the intention of promoting the course and/or resort.  I know that I usually don’t get the details I’m interested in. I want to present more relevant information for the value-oriented golfer.
